Overcoming Obstacles

Island Power Yoga had the opportunity to welcome and host Naomi Iwabuchi one of the founders of Yoga Room Hawaii on Oahu. She has a background of teaching graceful movement, and tapping into one’s inner self to unleash the beauty that lays beneath.

Naomi took the evening class through a flow that had movement that forced you to stay present on your mat. She challenged with twisting and strength then balanced the class with reminders of letting go of what holds you back. There was certainly heat and sweat but what I found most interesting was a physical feeling of shedding off a layer of doubt.

During this practice I was reminded that the physical asanas are her to challenge us to accept who we are right now in the present, then choose to react in a way that can encourage growth. The physical peak of this particular class was an arm balance, hurdlers imade approachable and fun. Naomi guided and illustrated variations using the yoga strap to create support. I heard laughter, I saw falling, but mostly I saw students overcoming doubt and just trying their best. This I do believe was the spiritual peak of class, I am grateful to witness these moments and it fuels my own creativity as a teacher and as a student.

I continue to look forward to hosting the instructors that have crossed my path and welcoming them to share their gift sets in the studio. I remain full of love, gratitude and humility to those that have come before me to carve out this beautiful yogi path.

Mahalo Naomi for coming to Maui, sharing your teachings and supporting us as we grow this yoga community in Kihei.
